We Survived the Ferguson Riots – A Real Life Story of A Ferguson Family

Rioting

On my “About Karen” page, I give you some of the details of our lives and how we got to where we are.  In it, I mention that I don’t want to give away too much information on how the Ferguson Riots affected us because there would be an article coming out on it.

The article was published yesterday on the Organic Prepper website.  If you were already a reader here at A Year Without the Grocery Store, you might not be aware of the article.  I wanted to link to it here so you could head over and read about our time in Ferguson during the riots.

You can find the article on the Daisy Luther’s website – The Organic Prepper here.

  1. Why didn’t you just move to St. Peters? We moved there in June 2014 from St. Louis, just 2 mos. ahead of the riots.

    • That’s a great question, Robert!

Our heart had been moving toward central Illinois for several years before moved there. We had been trying to sell our house off and on for several years. The housing crash of 2008 really hit our property values hard. We owed more on our house than it was worth, and the only way we could sell our house was to do a short sale. The only way we could do a short sale without legal repercussions according to our realtor and the lawyer we were put in touch with was to move for work purposes. If we moved to St. Peters, we couldn’t do a short sale on our house because we weren’t moving for business purposes. We had also been traveling to central IL once a month for three years prior to attend a specific church. We wanted to move to be close to that church. On top of that, my parents moved to central IL because of a job transfer during the riots. With the company in Central IL offering my husband a job, we were able to take care of the housing problem, be relatively close to my parents, and move to be closer to the church we wanted to attend with one move. While I’m not fond of Illinois regulation, it was the right move for us.

Now central IL is home with both the good and bad that that entails. If it weren’t for those specific reasons that I stated, moving to St. Peters would have been the natural choice. I’m glad you were able to get out ahead of the riots.

  2. My wife and I have started looking to Calhoun County for possible retirement. The “wine country” is too expensive, and their are too many criminals lurking around in the Ozarks.
