I mentioned in a post earlier this week that Jericho is my favorite prepper show that I’ve seen. The premise of Jericho is that there is a coordinated nuclear attack against the United States. A nuclear attack is among the things that scare people the most. A while ago I took a class in surviving a nuclear attack. The one message that the class hammered over and over and over is, “It is possible to survive a nuclear attack.”
That is the first thing that I want to empower you with. If you are outside of the first 2-3 miles away from the bomb, it is totally possible to survive a nuclear attack. You CAN survive a nuclear attack! That means that even the majority of a city which is hit with a nuclear bomb can still survive! This should be so encouraging to you, no matter where you live.
Before I help you build an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Kit), there are a few things that you need to understand about a nuclear explosion.
Nuclear Blast
The energy of a nuclear blast is broken down into three main types of energy. Fifty percent of the energy is the actual blast. Thirty-five percent of the energy given off by the blast is in the form of heat. Fifteen percent of the energy is given off in the form of radiation.
Eighty-five percent of the energy given off in a nuclear blast occurs within 1-3 miles of the actual detonation point. Yet it’s that fifteen percent of the energy that most people fear. So let’s demystify this part of the nuclear explosion.
Radiation
The radiation is divided further subdivided. Ten percent of the radiation given off comes from the initial blast! That energy comes in the form of gamma radiation. If you see the LIGHT from the blast (not witness the mushroom cloud from afar), you’ve already been exposed to gamma radiation.
That means with a nuclear detonation, most people are really only dealing with five percent that we need to deal with. This is REALLY good news. Not that a nuclear blast is good news, but if we have to face it, that the very vast majority of the people around will only be dealing with five percent of the energy from the nuclear blast IS good news.
The five percent of the energy from the nuclear blast is from the residual fallout.
Radioactive Fallout
Fallout is really just radioactively charged dirt. If you get hit with the fallout, you decontaminate yourself or someone else who is hit with it with soap and water.
Make sure you don’t breathe or ingest the fallout. It looks like fine white dust. If you are downwind of the fallout, you will need to prepare and take shelter.
So How Do We Prepare for Nuclear Blast? aka What should I include in my NBC kit?
1.) Geiger Counter
Make sure that you get the kind that clicks.
2.) Plastic sheeting
So why do we need plastic sheeting? The rule of 7’s.
For every multiple of 7 hours, the radiation is cut in half. If the first reading on the Geiger counter is 10, then in 7 hours, the reading should be 1. Now multiply 7 by 7. So in 49 more hours, the radiation should be .1. Multiply 49 (hours) x7, and you get 343 hours (approximately 14 days). At that time the reading should be .01. It SHOULD be safe at that time. Here it is in table form.
7 hours Geiger Counter 10
49 hours Geiger Counter 1
(approx. 2.5 days from detonation)
343 hours Geiger Counter .1
(approximately 16.5 days from detonation)
SOOOOOO, Karen, WHY do we need plastic sheeting? Because for a nuclear (or chemical or biological attack) you need to seal off your house. You will need enough plastic to seal your doors, windows, and chimneys. Having them pre-cut would be a HUGE plus! You don’t want to be cutting them out in the case of an attack.
3.) Duct Tape
So why duct tape? Because that’s what you’re going to use to tape the plastic sheeting in place. Make sure you have enough!
4.) Potassium Iodide tablets
Why do you need potassium iodide tablets? In the case of a nuclear attack, potassium iodide will help protect your thyroid. During a nuclear explosion, radioiodine is given off. Your thyroid absorbs iodine, and if radioiodine is given off, your thyroid will absorb it. Taking potassium iodide tablets will saturate your thyroid with iodine so it can’t absorb radioactive iodine.
5.) Bleach
Bleach both neutralizes a nerve agent as well as kills Ebola. Make sure you not only have a stash of it, but that it is NOT expired. Bleach expires.
6.) Gloves
You will need a supply of latex or nitrile gloves whether it’s Ebola or you need to go out and there’s a chance of radioactive fallout, so your body needs to be covered.
7.) Bodysuits
If you need to care for someone who is sick with a biological agent, then you may need to completely cover yourself in a suit. Amazon not only has them, but you can put them on subscribe and save! These will also help if you need to go out and there is radioactive fallout.
8.) N-95 Masks
If anyone needs to be out while the radioactive fallout is on its way, N-95 masks need to be worn to keep your lungs free from the fine particulate.
