Gourmet Food Storage – The King of Condiments

What do you think the King of Condiments is?  My husband might argue that it’s guacamole and my kids may suggest that it’s taco sauce.  They’ve been on a weird kick lately.

But seriously, the one condiment that our family goes through more than any other, the one condiment that my children could NOT live without is. . . .

KETCHUP

I’m sure I’m not the only one whose kids cover whatever food they are eating, that they don’t like, with ketchup.  My oldest son covers his beef stew in KETCHUP!  Really?  Beef stew?  Or even tonight, he decided he didn’t want to eat his baked potato, so what did he cover it in?

Exactly!! Ketchup!

Since I’m sure I’m not the only mom with an inclination to self-sufficiency whose kids devour ketchup, I wanted to share an incredibly simple no-cook recipe for making ketchup from just shelf-stable ingredients.

If you like THICK ketchup, then this version is for you.  It makes 1 pint of ketchup.

3/4 C        tomato powder

1 1/2 C     water

1/4 C        honey

2 T            apple cider vinegar

1 1/2 tsp  salt

1/2 tsp     onion powder

1/2 tsp     cinnamon

1/2 tsp     cloves

1/8 tsp     cayenne (more if you like it spicier)

If you like your ketchup runnier

1/2 C       tomato powder

1 1/4 C    water

2 T           honey

2 T           apple cider vinegar

1 tsp        salt

1/2 tsp     onion powder

1/4 tsp     cinnamon

1/4 tsp     cloves

1/8 tsp     cayenne pepper

Don’t forget, ketchup is good for more than just dunking your friend in.  You can use it in Sloppy Joes, cheeseburger casserole, sweet and sour chicken, meatloaf and so much more!

What do you consider to be the “King of the condiments?”  What’s your favorite use for ketchup?
