We’ve been doing a lot of talking about TEOTWAWKI lately both here and here. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, it stands for The End Of The World As We Know It, and it represents a complete upheaval of life. Usually, we’re talking about no electricity or running water, no normal natural gas delivery, no more cooking on your stove or refrigerating your food. No more driving cars (because you can’t get gas), and no more sending your kids to school. It’s called The End Of The World As We Know It for a reason. How do you handle this? There’s no easy way, but putting these 10 survival systems into place now will make life so much easier then.
When we’re considering TEOTWAWKI – because most of us can’t imagine what life like that would even REALLY be like, it’s hard to wrap our minds around all the things that we would need to do in order to go through a day without all of our modern conveniences – let alone a week, a month, or longer!
So when we are talking TEOTWAWKI, we need to speak in terms of survival systems that we put into place NOW so that we’re ready if something life-altering happens! So what systems should we be looking to put into place? Let’s tackle these one at a time briefly. We’ll hit each one in-depth over the next couple 2-3 months.
Assumptions
So what are my assumptions that I’m basing this article on? It’s important for you to understand them so you can tailor your systems to what you need if you have different assumptions than I do.
First off, I’m assuming that I’m staying in place during TEOTWAWKI as long as possible. If I have everything ready at home, why am I going to abandon it, if it’s just as dangerous somewhere else as it is here? I’m certainly not going to head off into the woods and think that I’m going to live there.
I’m assuming that there may be a time when I may have to leave, and I’m going to prepare for that contingency – but I still don’t plan to go live in the woods.
Also, I’m assuming that none of the normal systems that we’ve used will be in place – no running water, electricity, natural gas, grocery stores, gas stations, etc. Instead, we need to put these survival systems into place.
So let’s jump in!
10 Long-term survival systems to have in place in the event of TEOTWAWKI
1. Water
Water before food? YES! We can live approximately three weeks without food, but we can only live three days without water. If all water were to stop flowing right now, how would you survive?
2. Food
While we can only live 3 days without water, it does take much longer to grow food than it may to take care of your water situation – depending on where you live. So having both a short-term and a long-term food plan is a must. How are you going to grow food so that no one wants to come in and steal it because they see a nice garden planted in rows? But more than just having or growing food, how are you going to cook it and preserve it?
3. Sanitation
It won’t even take a whole day for your family to need to “use the facilities.” How are you going to handle this both short-term and long-term?
4. First Aid
Can you even wrap your mind around not having 24/7 access to a doctor or ER? What plans do you have in place for this contingency?
5. Comfort
Comfort includes so much more than just being comfortable. What about heating and cooling? What about helping your kids as they work through the trauma that they are going through. How are you going to create a new “normal” for them, one where they understand the dangers and yet can function and live – hopefully not just survive?
6. Shelter
What about your house? Despite not having (or maybe because you don’t have) heating and cooling or electricity, things are going to go wrong with your house. Are you even somewhat prepared to deal with repairs, etc? What about if you HAVE to leave? What if it’s growing dangerous in your area, and you’ve determined that it is time to pack up a few belongings and go? What kind of shelter will you be providing your family?
7. Safety
Safety is so much more than how many guns and how much ammo you have. Safety is… what principles do we need to teach our children so that they can be as safe as it is possible for them to be in the current climate? Do your children know how to shoot a gun? What do you need to have in place at your house so you can keep it and your property safe?
8. Clothing
I don’t know about you, but my kids are growing SO FAST!! Every time I turn around, I’m having to buy new clothes. They are too tight or too short. How are you and I going to provide our families with clothing? I’m going to talk about principles and strategies when we cover this in much more depth.
9. Communication
It’s not just going to be important to communicate with other people, but getting news is going to be hugely important during TEOTWAWKI. What steps should we take now in order to be able to better get news and communicate with those that don’t live near us if we were to experience a life-altering event?
10. Car Specific
When you realize that it’s much more dangerous to stay than it would be to leave your location, how are you going to get out of there? What are your strategies? What do you need to keep in your car for this eventuality? We’ll discuss different options and thoughts on what do to.
What About You?
Are there other survival systems that you believe should be put into place before we get to TEOTWAWKI? Are there specific ways that you are preparing now for that eventuality? I’d love to hear! Please share with us in the comments, so that we can all be better prepared.

having guns and ammo and a car is great, but don’t forget oil, filters, cleaning supplies, and if you store gas or diesel remember to put sta-bil in it so it does not break down and become useless.
